Suggested Timeline

Day 1

Introduce Taconite Rocks!
  • Hand out taconite sample packets to students.
  • Allow time for them to examine and feel the differences.

Discuss
  • what taconite is.
  • the process of changing rock to pellet.
  • importance of taconite to Iron Range economy.
  • family members or friends employed at a plant.

Present an overview of activities for the three units:
  • history
  • process
  • careers

Distribute student folders.

Day 2

Introduce History unit:
  • View "The Birthplace of Minnesota Taconite Mining" (9 1/2-minute video).
  • Discuss questions, Worksheet 1-A.

Day 3

Continue History unit:
  • View "Minnesota Mining: A New Beginning" (23 minute video)
  • Discuss questions, Worksheet 1-B.

Day 4

Continue History unit:
  • Introduce Timeline activity, Worksheet 1-C
  • Complete Map activity, Worksheet 1-D
  • Review video contents and previous lessons

Day 5

Introduce Process unit:
  • Introduce "Let's Rock!" poster.
  • Discuss questions.

Day 6

Continue Process unit:
  • View "Where Steel Begins" (15-minute video).
  • Compare video to "Let's Rock!" poster.
  • Complete "Let's Rock!" Worksheet 2-A or 2-B.

Day 7

Continue Process unit:
  • Introduce and discuss "Reclaiming the Land" poster.
  • Complete Worksheet 2-C.
  • Introduce class project.
  • Complete Part II, Lesson 2 Art and Written Language assessment.

Day 8

Introduce Careers unit:
  • Complete "Whistle While You Work" interest assessment, Worksheet 3-A

Day 9

Continue Careers unit:
  • Discuss and complete career grid.
  • Complete Worksheet 3-B.

Day 10

Continue Careers unit:
  • Invite resource speaker.
  • Complete Written Assessment: Write a paragraph titled "If I Worked in the Mines."
